Three previous school teachers of University of Newcastle graduates will be recognised for their lasting positive impacts on the lives of students with an award from the University of Newcastle.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Kevin McConkey, said the Vice-Chancellor's School Teacher Awards were introduced to highlight the role of school teachers in the choices students make about their future.

"One of the greatest influences on student learning is quality teaching, and teachers deserve support and encouragement for their commitment to students.

"We asked students who completed their University studies in 2007 to nominate a teacher from their past who had a lasting and profound impact on their lives.

"Through that process we have found some truly inspiring teachers who are well deserving of the award."

Helen MacFadyen from Lisarow High School, Paul Tierney from Kinross Wolaroi School (Orange) and David Brown from Dungog High School will be recognised during the graduation ceremonies of the students who nominated them.

They will each receive $5,000 in prize money and their schools will receive $2,000.

Nominations were received for teachers in non-government and government schools from students completing a range of degree programs.

The selection panel comprised University staff, one member from Convocation, three school Principals and three University students.

Paul Tierney will receive his award during the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment graduation ceremony, Tuesday 15 April at 10am in the Great Hall at the University of Newcastle.

David Brown will receive his award during the Faculty of Science and Information Technology graduation ceremony, Tuesday 15 April at 2pm in the Great Hall at the University of Newcastle.

Helen MacFadyen received her award during the Faculty of Education and Arts graduation ceremony today. An alternative time for photographs can be arranged.

The recipients of the University of Newcastle's Vice-Chancellor's School Teacher Awards for 2007 are:

Helen MacFadyen - Mathematics teacher, Lisarow High School

Helen MacFadyen was nominated by Carolyn Little, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood.

Carolyn's nomination said Helen is an inspiring teacher who makes her subject exciting and relevant to the real world. She dedicates much of her time outside of regular school hours to support students in their studies, and to encourage them in their creative endeavours.

According to Carolyn, Helen's patience and imagination combine to create a truly memorable learning experience that motivates students to extend themselves.

Paul Tierney - Assistant Registrar, mathematics teacher and sporting coach, Kinross Wolaroi School (Orange)

Paul Tierney was nominated by Benjamin Abell, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Construction Management.

Benjamin nominated Paul as a teacher who thoroughly enjoys the privilege of supporting students as they face the challenges of completing senior studies. Paul takes his role as a student mentor very seriously and is always approachable, available and willing to be involved in all activities.

Benjamin said Paul had made a lasting and profound contribution to his school and his students.

David Brown - Head Teacher, mathematics, Dungog High School

David Brown was nominated by Megan Ford, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Law Mathematics/Bachelor of Science.

According to Megan, David is a passionate and caring teacher who goes the extra mile for students, and succeeds in making mathematics a highlight of the school day. As Head Teacher, David makes time for students when they most need support, and he makes learning exciting.

David's love of his work is a shining example that stays with his students and inspires them to keep achieving.
