Mrs Fatu Kigbo from the University of Newcastle will draw on personal experience when she discusses the differences between life in Australia and life in Nigeria for females, at International Women's Day celebrations tomorrow.

Mrs Kigbo said public affection was one example in which the cultures differed. "In Australia it is commonplace to see adult couples showing affection in public, however in Nigeria this behaviour is frowned upon," she said. Mrs Kigbo will talk about these differences and more.

The University of Newcastle will join organisations and communities worldwide to celebrate International Women's Day on Thursday 8 March 2007.

Ms Glynis Wattus, Manager, Equity and Diversity Unit, said the day was a great opportunity for the University to celebrate the diversity of its female staff.

"Female staff will hear colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds talk about their heritage and what International Women's Day means to them," said Ms Wattus.
