New University year gets underway

More than 150 students will get their first taste of university life when the University of Newcastle's annual Orientation Day gets underway this week at the Port Macquarie campus.

Orientation Day will be held this Thursday 8 February 2007 to welcome the new students to the academic year.

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nicholas Saunders, said demand for University places at the Port Macquarie campus has grown significantly with the number of first round offers made to undergraduate students up by 33 per cent on 2006 numbers.

"For the first time the Port Macquarie Campus is offering students the opportunity to study a Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts program," he said.

"The new double degree course prepares people to teach in primary schools and is in addition to the Graduate Diploma in Education.

"Students will also begin studying in the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Information Technology and Bachelor of Business degree and the Open Foundation by Distance program."

The Vice-Chancellor and the Director of TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute, Elizabeth McGregor, will address the students and provide an introduction to the cultural, social and academic aspects of University life.

Faculty information sessions will provide students with an overview of their individual program and course requirements and tours of the teaching rooms and laboratories will help students familiarise themselves with the campus facilities.
