The University of Newcastle has been ranked as one of the world's top 100 universities for engineering technology and computer sciences.

The renowned Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Ranking ranks research universities across the world by their academic or research performance, based on internationally comparable data.

In its latest report - which ranks the world's universities by broad subject fields - the University of Newcastle is one of only four Australian universities in the world's top 100 for engineering technology and computer sciences.

The University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Barney Glover, said the ranking was an outstanding achievement.

"Newcastle is the only non-Group of Eight Australian university ranked in the top 100 in this field," he said.

"The University locally, nationally and internationally excels in a number of fields including engineering, which is full of incredible researchers doing amazing things for the benefit of us all."

"Initiatives such as the University's Priority Research Centres will further strengthen our excellent reputation for research outcomes."

The University's Priority Research Centres bring together researchers across health, energy and the environment, and science and engineering.

The Priority Research Centres focus the University's resources into areas of existing and potential research strength, and promote cross-faulty and cross-disciplinary research.
