University releases Main Round Offers

The University of Newcastle will release 8075 Main Round Offers to undergraduate students today.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Services), Dr Sue Gould, said in 2007 the University had made 19 per cent more offers in the Main Round than in 2006 - up from 6797.

"Newcastle continues to be the university of first choice for students in the region. Our excellence in teaching and learning, and research provides our students with life and work skills, as well as cutting-edge knowledge."

Total number of domestic full fee paying offers: 1190

* Please note that this figure does not include the 22 offers made through UAC to full fee paying international students. To date, the University has made 3110 offers to international students.

Individual campuses

Callaghan campus

Number of offers: 6608 (up by 19 per cent)
Number of commonwealth supported offers: 5642
Number of domestic full fee paying offers: 966

Ourimbah campus

Number of offers: 1314 (up by 16 per cent)
Number of commonwealth supported offers: 1128
Number of domestic full fee paying offers: 186

Port Macquarie campus

Number of offers: 153 (up by 33 per cent)
Number of commonwealth supported offers: 115
Number of domestic full fee paying offers: 38

Most popular degree program: B Teaching/B Arts at the Callaghan campus - 482 offers made for commonwealth supported places.

New undergraduate programs being offered in 2007: Bachelor of Podiatry (Ourimbah), Bachelor of Psychology (Ourimbah) and Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor Arts (Port Macquarie).

Offers to students who have completed a preparatory course at the University of Newcastle:

• 709 offers have been made to applicants who completed the Open Foundation program at the University of Newcastle in 2006. Open Foundation is a program for people who have been out of the education system for some time and hope to study in an undergraduate degree program in the future.
• 129 offers have been made to applicants who completed the Newstep program at the University of Newcastle in 2006. Newstep is a program for 17 - 21 year olds who were disadvantaged in their upper schooling.
• three offers have been made to applicants who completed the Yapug program at the University of Newcastle in 2006. Yapug is a pre-degree program for Indigenous students.

What do students need to do now?

Students can access their results from 9pm tonight at the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) website, www.uac.edu.au; and the UAC InfoLine on 1900 957 500; or they can read the list of offers on Thursday 18 January 2007, in The Sydney Morning Herald or The Daily Telegraph, with subsets in The Herald and The Canberra Times. All applicants will receive a letter in the mail.

The University of Newcastle will make further offers in subsequent UAC rounds this year. However, if applicants receive a Main Round offer, they are strongly urged to accept their offer.

In the Late Round students will automatically be considered for any of the preferences listed higher than the preference offered in the Main Round. If students wish to be considered for other programs they must change their preferences.

If applicants want to change or reorder their preferences, they should first check that the program they want to change to has vacancies (this is indicated by a V shown in brackets after the cut-off in the newspaper). Applicants should ensure they are eligible for any new programs they list in their preferences. Vacancies may exist in programs other than those specified with a (V), but only if Main Round offers are not accepted.

Preference changes to be considered in the Late Round will be accepted by UAC until midnight Monday 22 January 2007. Late Round offers will be released by UAC on Wednesday 31 January 2007.

Late applications and preference changes to be considered for the Final Round will be accepted by UAC until Thursday 1 February 2007. Final Round offers will be released by UAC on Wednesday 7 February 2007.

Applicants who wish to accept or defer their offer of place at the University of Newcastle must follow the instructions sent with their offer.

University Advisory Day

The University of Newcastle will hold an additional Advisory Day on Friday 19 January 2007 for all prospective students, including those who did not receive an Main Round offer from UAC.
