World-first renewable energy technology on its way

Monday 11 December 2006

In a world-first, Australian researchers will develop a novel heat regenerator enabling the production of low-cost zero-emission electricity from geothermal reservoirs.

The innovative renewable energy project is the result of a partnership between the University of Newcastle and Proactive Energy Developments Limited (PED).

The University's researchers, Associate Professor Behdad Moghtaderi and Dr Elham Doroodchi, in collaboration with PED experts, have conceived and lodged a patent application for the technology.

The unique project received $1.2 million in funding from the Australian Government in the latest round of highly competitive Renewable Energy Development Initiative grants.

An additional $1.2 million will be provided by PED Ltd, bringing the total funding for the project to $2.4 million.

University of Newcastle Priority Research Centre for Energy Co-director, Associate Professor Behdad Moghtaderi, said geothermal energy had the potential to generate electricity without any greenhouse gas emissions.

"Geothermal technology is a major source of renewable energy with no greenhouse gas emissions. If we can harness this energy it would be a win-win for the environment and the community."

Associate Professor Moghtaderi will work with Dr Elham Doroodchi and a team of University of Newcastle researchers and PED experts to develop the technology. The project is expected to conclude in 2008.

The University's Priority Research Centres bring together researchers across health, energy and the environment, and science and engineering, to embark on research driven by stronger strategy and maximising their competitive strengths.
