Latest University Admissions Centre (UAC) application figures indicate total preferences for entry into the University of Newcastle in 2007 increased by 1.1 per cent compared to last year.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Services), Dr Sue Gould, said the increased demand to study at the University of Newcastle was a reflection of the institution's growing reputation as a leader in professional education.
"Demand for our new offerings has been very positive particularly for our teacher education program at Port Macquarie; and the podiatry and psychology programs at Ourimbah," Dr Gould said.
Application data has also indicated a marked increase in total preferences for the radiation science, medicine and nursing programs.
"The Australian Government has identified nursing as one of its key priorities. It is pleasing that the University of Newcastle is attracting students into this national priority area," Dr Gould said.
Preferences for professional areas including engineering and architecture were also higher. The total preference figure for the University of Newcastle is likely to increase further with the return of students who deferred in 2005.
UAC will accept late applications for 2007 until 1 February 2007. However, to be guaranteed inclusion in the Main Round of offers, applications must be received by 8 December 2006.
For those who have already submitted an application, they have until 4 January 2007 to change their course preferences for consideration in the Main Round of offers, released at 9pm on 17 January 2007.
"The University of Newcastle is hosting Advisory Days in December and January for prospective students to talk to staff and get last minute advice before the closing date for changing preferences," Dr Gould said.
Advisory Days will be held on Wednesday 20 December at the Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses; and Wednesday 3 January at the Callaghan, Ourimbah and Port Macquarie campuses. For more information visit the Advisory Days website.
