The University of Newcastle is continuing its strong support of helping our community's young children with special needs.
Firstchance is an early intervention program which is run through the University's Special Education Centre since 1976. The early intervention program recognises that family is the most important influence on the child. The program strives to support families to bring out their best in their child.
Firstchance patron and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle Professor Nick Saunders said support from large organisations for important not for profit community based programs such as Firstchance was critical to their ongoing success.
"Grassroots activities such as those provided through Firstchance are at the heart of bringing about real change to some of the challenges facing our community.
"The University is proud to throw its support behind such a worthwhile organisation which directly helps 170 local families bring out the best in their child."
Firstchance will hold a Charity Ball on Friday 27 October at Newcastle City Hall.
This year the University has provided vouchers for accommodation and meals which will be raffled on the night. More than 40 local businesses, including Bali at the Bay, Crowne Plaza, Cypress Lakes and Moonshadow Cruises, have provided support for the Ball.
"Large organisations have a responsibility to their local community to be good corporate citizens. Our support for Firstchance is one plank in the University's efforts to give back to the community."
