The University of Newcastle rises in world rankings

Friday 15 September 2006

Two independent, internationally recognised university ranking systems have recognised the standing of the University of Newcastle.

The renowned Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Ranking from China ranks research universities across the world by their academic or research performance, based on internationally comparable data.

Its 2006 rankings place the University of Newcastle at 337, up from 362 in 2005 and 398 in 2004.

The Times Higher Education Supplement, a British publication which is largely based on peer review, places the University of Newcastle at 127 in a list of the world's top 200 universities for 2005. It also places the University at 63 in its list of the World's top 100 Biomedicine Universities.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kevin McConkey, said the rankings provided an excellent measure of how the University of Newcastle compared internationally.

"The University's high rankings are testament that the institution is recognised not only locally and nationally, but also internationally for its high standards in research, teaching and learning," he said.

"Initiatives such as the University's Priority Research Centres will further strengthen our excellent reputation for research outcomes.

"Our commitment to the total student experience, as well as to initiatives in the delivery of quality teaching, also point to the strong combination of teaching and research at the University of Newcastle."
