Encouraging Leaders of Tomorrow

Thursday 7 September 2006

To promote the Hunter's future, the University of Newcastle is sending one of the Region's most talented young leaders to an exclusive leadership development program.

Brad Webb, Chief Operating Officer of Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), was announced as winner of the inaugural Hunter Leadership Award at the Hunter Leadership Dinner last night.

Judged by a panel of community leaders from across the Hunter Region, Brad was one of six finalists who were short-listed for the award. Finalists represented a broad range of industry groups from teaching, tourism, local government and charity organisations.

Other finalists included William Creedon from Hunter Valley Gardens, Martin Gray from Rotaract Club of Hunter Valley, Chanti Richardson from Newcastle City Council, Michelle Nunn from Newcastle City Council and Shivani Gupta from Real Business Consulting.

Presenting the award, acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, Professor Kevin McConkey, said the calibre of the finalists was extremely high. Brad was announced as winner because he clearly demonstrated leadership not only professionally, but also at a community level.

"In addition to a successful career at a number of Hunter organisations, both private and not-for-profit, Brad is actively striving to improve the Hunter's future."

Professor McConkey also spoke about the importance of encouraging positive role models and leaders.

"The Hunter community needs to encourage emerging leaders to inspire and support their peers, motivate others and act as positive role models.

"The Award aims to recognise and reward emerging leaders from the Hunter region in order to encourage growth, development and confident leadership for the regions future," he said.

Brad will attend a leadership development course at the prestigious Mt Eliza Centre for Executive Education worth $10,000, including accommodation and travel expenses.

The Hunter Leadership Award is a partnership between the University of Newcastle, the Hunter Economic Development Corporation and FordComm.
