The University of Newcastle has won the Best Institution prize at the Australian Institute of Energy's 2006 NSW and ACT Postgraduate Student Energy Awards.
Four PhD chemical engineering students from the University received awards for energy research, including projects developing processes for the effective and efficient capture of carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants.
Mr Yusuf Badat, Mr Sameer Khare, Mr Chris Stevanov and Mr Renu Rathnam, each received awards for their research conducted under supervisors Associate Professor Behdad Moghtaderi and Professor Terry Wall.
This research is part of larger projects underway in the University's recently announced Priority Research Centre for Energy. Mr Yusuf Badat and Mr Renu Rathnam will now represent NSW and ACT at the Inaugural National Postgraduate Student Energy Awards in Melbourne later this year.
