Chamber Choir hits the right note for win

The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir has won the NSW state final of the ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year competition.

Conductor Philip Matthias said the Choir was thrilled with the win as the ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year is the country's largest choral competition.

More than 60 choirs from NSW auditioned for the competition. The top six then competed in the NSW state final. The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir took out the adult division of the NSW state final with its 20 minute performance of six pieces ranging from the 17th century to modern arrangements.

The Choir now has its fingers crossed that it will be one of the three choirs chosen from the winners of all state finals to progress to the national final in Sydney. An announcement is due on Friday 11 August 2006.
