An extra perspective on the HSC

Friday 23 June 2006

The University of Newcastle is providing opportunities for students from Newcastle and the Hunter regions to gain an extra perspective on HSC subjects.

It is hosting the popular HSC Study Days, held each year, to assist current Year 12 students with their studies.

Presented as a series of workshops, the HSC Study Days cover a large range of HSC subjects (with accompanying study notes) and provide assistance and advice from experienced HSC teachers and University lecturers. They also allow the students to gain useful study strategies and tips for subject assessments as well as advice from University Course and Careers staff to discuss future study or university needs.

The HSC Days will be held on:

  • Monday 3 July - Music Workshops at the University of Newcastle's Conservatorium of Music
  • Tuesday 4 July - At the University's Callaghan campus
  • Wednesday 5 July - At the University's Ourimbah campus

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Corporate Development and Community Partnerships, Associate Professor Martin Fitzgerald, says the HSC Days are a valuable augmentation to the preparation for the HSC.

Professor Fitzgerald says the opportunity to gain a different perspective on curriculum material, from University lecturers in the respective areas and also that of other high school teachers, is a very valuable one.

"Just to gain a different point of view, or experience a topic presented in an entirely different way, can make an amazing difference to a Year 12 student's understanding of their subject. It can give them a much broader perspective and added confidence - an 'edge' if you like," Professor Fitzgerald says.

"The feedback about the HSC Study Days has, over the years, been extremely positive and the University is delighted to be able to contribute to the success of HSC students in the region," he says.

Subjects to be covered in the workshops include: Standard English, Advanced English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Modern History, Design and Technology, Business Studies, Music and Drama.

Costs are $33 for the full music series and $16.50 per 90 minute workshop. Bookings are essential and enquiries about availability, transport and registration should be made by telephoning Mardi Ryan on (02) 4921 6241
