An innovative Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) pilot study which is treating depression in heart disease patients will continue thanks to funding from the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (ARHRF).

$450,000 Grant To Develop Environmental Monitoring System

The University of Newcastle will assist the $200 million Western Australian pearling industry by monitoring the environment of the remote Kimberley pearl farms thanks to a $450,000 investment by the Australian Government Fisheries Research and Development Corporation.

$4,000 scholarships for university physiotherapy students

Three physiotherapy students at the University of Newcastle will tomorrow be awarded scholarships to help them with their studies. Sarah Hallams and Andrea Oracki, both third year students in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, along with second year student Tara Smith, will each be presented with a $4,000 Lewis Ewart Lewis Scholarship.

NUbots are new world champs!

The University of Newcastle's NUbots have taken on the world in robotic soccer and won RoboCup 2006 in Germany. The NUbots beat the University of New South Wales in a close final, scoring seven goals to three.

Drug Action Week 18 - 24 June 2006. Dr Amanda Baker, HMRI researcher at the University of Newcastle's Centre for Mental Health Studies, is an internationally recognised expert researching treatments for people suffering from co-occurring mental health and alcohol or other drug problems.

The University of Newcastle continues to address doctor shortages

Twelve placements in the 2007 Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle will be reserved for regional students. The Faculty of Health is continuing to address the shortage of doctors in regional centres by introducing a 'Dean's List' to ensure students from Rural Remote and Metropolitan Areas 2 (RRMA 2) are represented in each admission.

Celebrating 20 years of social initiatives

The project, which has never looked back after being established in 1986 and initially funded by the Bernard van Leer Foundation of The Netherlands, has achieved remarkable results for people who live in caravan parks.
