Environment Challenge Tackled in Newcastle Region

Friday 30 June 2006

The University of Newcastle's new Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment will bring together for the first time academics, practitioners and the community to tackle the environmental, social and economic dimensions of the region's sustainable development.

Institute Director, John Rodger, said there was a serious demand for a mechanism to build partnerships between the University and community to focus regional expertise to address the environmental challenges of the future and develop solutions that meet our unique needs.

"The first step in building these partnerships will be regular forums on key issues. The Institute will host community and business leaders, researchers, academics, students, environment and land managers, environmental practitioners and entrepreneurs, and the community to share information, engage in debate and build partnerships for our region."

The first Tom Farrell Institute forum - Capturing value from Green and biomass waste - will be held on Friday 7 July 2006 from 2pm - 4.30pm, in the Aviation Building (AVG14), Callaghan Campus, University of Newcastle.

Tom Farrell was a prominent Newcastle businessman who was actively involved in protecting the Newcastle region's national parks and reserves. He was also a key player in setting up the University of Newcastle.
