Newcastle students have achieved exceptional results at the recent Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne. The tally is two gold medals, one silver medal, with all Newcastle athletes participating in their respective event’s finals.
The results are –

• 8th place in the final of the Women’s 400m track event.
• GOLD MEDAL in the Women’s 4x400m relay
Heath Francis (Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Business)
• GOLD MEDAL in the Men’s 200m EAD T46
Christie Dawes (Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching)
• 5th place in the final of the Women’s 800m EAD T54
Michael Brown (Bachelor of Surveying)
• SILVER MEDAL in the Men’s 50m Three Position Rifle Pairs
Prudence Watt (Bachelor of Science)
• 7th place in the final of the Women’s 50m Freestyle EAD
• 7th place in the final of the Women 100m Freestyle EAD
Benn Harradine (Bachelor of Education)
• 8th place in the final of the Men’s Discus
Katherine Proudfoot (currently studying for a PhD in Linguistics)
• 5th place in the EAD T38 100 metres
Newcastle University Sport’s Sport and Recreation Coordinator, Justine Whipper, says that had our University been entered as a country in the Games we would have finished 15th on the final medal table. That’s a tremendous effort in anyone’s book.
