University Welcomes Students

Tuesday 7 February 2006

The University of Newcastle will welcome more than 160 commencing students to the academic year at the Port Macquarie campus this week.

Many of the students will attend an Orientation Day at the Port Macquarie campus on Thursday 9 February 2006.

Professor Nick Saunders, Vice-Chancellor from the University of Newcastle, and Mr Neil Black, Director of TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute, will welcome new students to the campus.

The Orientation Session will then provide commencing students with an introduction to the social, cultural and academic aspects of University life and learning support services.

This year is set to be another impressive one for the University of Newcastle with overall demand for University places in Port Macquarie increasing.

For the first time, students will begin studies in the Bachelor of Business degree at Port Macquarie. First year students will join continuing students in the Bachelor of Nursing and the Bachelor of Information Technology degrees. These students will also be joined by students enrolled in the University’s highly successful Graduate Diploma in Education and Open Foundation by distance programs.

The University’s expanding range of degree programs at Port Macquarie was boosted by the news last year that the Federal Government will invest $3.47 million for the expansion of teaching and library facilities.

Classes will begin on Monday 20 February 2006; however, people interested in studying Business or Information Technology at the Port Macquarie campus this year, are invited to visit the campus on the afternoon of Thursday 9 February 2006 to talk with staff about the direct application process which is still open.
