University Appoints Faculty Leaders

Two internationally recognised scholars have been appointed to lead the Faculties of Business and Law and Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle.

Professor Stephen Nicholas has been appointed to the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Business and Law) and Professor John Carter to the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engineering and Built Environment).

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nick Saunders says he is delighted to announce the appointments.

“It says a great deal about the University of Newcastle that we have attracted two senior academics of such high standing to join us,” says Professor Saunders.

“The University will be strengthened by their appointment and I look forward to the leadership and commitment they will bring to the University’s teaching and research programs,” says Professor Saunders.

Professor Stephen Nicholas

Professor Stephen NicholasProfessor Nicholas is currently the Sesqui Professor of International Business and Head of the School of Economics and Political Science at the University of Sydney. Prior to this he held the position of Professor of Economic History and Co-Director of the Australian Centre for International Business at the University of Melbourne and University of New South Wales.

Professor Nicholas has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Syracuse and a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa. A distinguished scholar in the fields of international business and econometric and business history, he is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the author of an extensive range of journal articles, contributions to books and refereed conference proceedings. Professor Nicholas will join the University of Newcastle in March 2006.

 

Professor John Carter

Professor John CarterProfessor Carter is currently the Chair of the Academic Board at the University of Sydney. He also holds the positions of Challis Professor of Civil Engineering and Chair of the Research Committee at the University of Sydney. A distinguished scholar, Professor Carter was educated at the University of Sydney and Kings’ College, University of London. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, a Doctor of Philosophy and a Doctor of Engineering all from the University of Sydney.

Professor Carter was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 2003 in recognition of his contributions to engineering research and practice. He is a former National Chair of the Australian Geomechanics Society and the author of several hundred refereed technical papers in geotechnical engineering and engineering mechanics.

Professor Carter will join the University of Newcastle in February 2006.
