The University of Newcastle continues to demonstrate its reputation as a leading educator of highly skilled graduates with a new survey revealing that 90.3% of 2003 - 04 graduate engineers from the University secured employment as engineers this year.
The survey released by the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia (APESMA) revealed the University's figures are well above the national average of 82%.
Professor Mark Jones, Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, says the result clearly demonstrates that the University of Newcastle's engineering graduates are highly sought after by employers.
"This is a clear indication of the quality of our engineering program. We have some of Australia's best facilities, students, research and teaching staff. These factors combined with our relationship with industry is obviously the key to making our graduates some of the most employable in the country," says Professor Jones.
In a big day for engineering at the University, high school students from across Australia will compete in the inaugural Science and Engineering National Grand Challenge, with the winner to be announced this afternoon. The Challenge encourages students to develop an interest in science and engineering and to consider the possibilities of a career in these fields when they reach University.
