University Climbs in World Ranking

The University of Newcastle has gained 45 places in this year's Top 500 World University Rankings by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai.

The internationally recognised ranking system places the University of Newcastle as one of the top Australian Innovative Research Universities (IRU) and at 352 of the top 500 in the world.

The University of Newcastle is one of only fourteen Australian Universities in the top 500 international ranking.

"This is an excellent result for the University of Newcastle," said Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Saunders.

"It is recognition that the quality of teaching and research at this University is world class and also acknowledges the high standing that our researchers and the work they do have in the international arena."

The Shanghai Jiao Tong University uses several indicators to assess universities, including teaching and research performance, size of institution and number of articles by the university's academics in international publications during the year.
