The University of Newcastle's planning for significant cuts in recurrent expenditure has reached a stage where a reliable estimate of staff reductions can be made.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nick Saunders told staff at forums today at Ourimbah and Callaghan campuses that it now appeared likely that between 250 and 290 administrative positions and between 150 and 180 academic positions would have to be shed to ensure the University could continue to operate.
In total, staffing levels will need to be reduced by around 450 positions.
"This is a regrettable situation," Professor Saunders said, "however the University has no other choice if it is to remain a competitive and viable institution that can contribute to the community it serves."
"Without these changes the University would continue to record deficits of between $23M and $28M each year till 2010."
"Staff reductions are based on a very careful analysis of the University's administrative processes and systems and academic workload and activities."
"It is important to stress that any changes to courses and programs at the University will not affect currently enrolled students. Any changes in academic programs will be offered to commencing students from 2006."
Professor Saunders said the recent call for expressions of interest for voluntary separation packages from staff had yielded over 300 responses.
"Where possible, the University will accommodate those staff wishes," he said.
"This is a difficult process and it will be a painful time for many. Unfortunately it is the University's only course if it is to retain its reputation as a high quality teaching and research university, that can look ahead with confidence."
