The University of Newcastle's Conservatorium will hold a memorial concert tomorrow night for former student and teacher David Jones, who died in a car accident earlier this year.
The concert will feature performances by staff and students of the Conservatorium in David's honour. Details of an annual prize in David's name will be announced at the concert, with proceeds from tickets sales and donations going towards the prize.
Concert Manager Philip Sketchley says the concert will allow for the community to gather and pay tribute to the well-known local musician.
"David's life was the Con," says Philip. "Of his 46 years, he spent the last 31 years with the Con; first as a student, then as a part-time and full-time lecturer."
"David was in the process of completing his PhD on Australian composer Nigel Butterley when he died."
"It is fitting then that the subject of his thesis, Nigel Butterley, will actually perform at the concert," says Philip.
One of David's students and now staff member, Greg Smith, has composed a cello piece in memory of David which will be performed at the concert by Anthony Albrecht on cello and Greg on piano.
The Memorial Concert for David Jones will be held at the Conservatorium at 7.30pm on Friday 27 May 2005. Ticket prices: Adult $12, Concession $8 and Child $6.
