Baby Bonding for Dads

Friday 1 April 2005

A new program for expectant fathers will tackle the skills needed for dads to bond effectively with their babies from day one.

Richard Fletcher, from the Engaging Fathers Program of the Family Action Centre at the University of Newcastle, says for the first time a specific program is being offered to give Hunter fathers the latest information on how they can have a positive effect on their new babies' growth and development.

The Baby Bonding For Dads workshop is part of the Fathers Antenatal Program which is run jointly by Newcastle Private Hospital and the University of Newcastle.

Richard, who delivers the workshop, says video footage of new babies will be used to give dads the skills they'll need to "talk to their baby from day one".

"Having your first child is one of the biggest things that can happen to you in your life. The research that we have now supports the special role that fathers can play with their infants, so it is important to get the information you need on making the vital connection early with the baby. You don't have to wait until they can kick a football; fathers have a role from day one."

Meagan Evans, Parent Education Coordinator for Newcastle Private Hospital who has been educating expectant mothers and fathers for the last five years in the Hunter, sees the value in running specific classes just for fathers.

"It gives the fathers practical and realistic education on the issues that involve them as a father during the birth and after," says Meagan.

The Baby Bonding For Dads workshop will be held on Friday 1 April 2005 at Newcastle Private Hospital as part of the Fathers Antenatal Program which is run jointly by Newcastle Private Hospital and the Engaging Fathers Program of the Family Action Centre at the University of Newcastle.
