Nursing Graduate Returns as Lecturer

Thursday 31 March 2005

Matthew Walsh, a nursing graduate from the University of Newcastle, has overcome adversity to become the first graduate to return as a Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Newcastle.

Matthew graduated in the Bachelor of Nursing in 1994, with the goal of one day returning to teach at the University that had inspired his career path.

In 1996, following a serious work related back injury; Matthew was told nursing was not going to be part of his future. Matthew was devastated.

Matthew said, "Consequently, I started a science degree, which I completed in 1999. However, I missed nursing terribly and after three years of rehabilitation I was able to return to nursing."

"Since then I have worked in the Children's ward at Gosford Hospital, the Children's Hospital at Westmead, where I later became a clinical nurse educator, and most recently at the College of Nursing in Sydney."

"My passion for nursing, and nursing education have fueled my career goal to one day return to the University of Newcastle and teach."

"The University itself has been an integral part of my life," said Matthew. "As a child growing up I used the University's sporting facilities. At high school I regularly utilised the Auchmunity library. I learnt to drive a car in the University car parks, and even met my wife, a fellow nursing student, whilst completing my Bachelor of Nursing, so it’s great to be back."

"In my new role as a Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, I intend to build a successful academic career that will not only make a significant contribution to the nursing profession but also the community."

"I have read recently that success is a journey not a destination, but to me it's all about making a difference to the lives of others and contributing to your chosen profession and your community," said Matthew.

Professor Kathleen Fahy, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery said, "We welcome Matthew to the team as our first graduate in the Bachelor of Nursing to return as a Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Newcastle, and we hope he can inspire others to follow their goals in life with the same dedication."
