Katherine Lindsay from the University's School of Law says the University is thrilled to have attracted a lawyer of Margaret Cunneen’s stature to deliver this year's address. Ms Cunneen is known for prosecuting a series of high-profile paedophile and gang rape cases.

Margaret Cunneen has been a Crown Prosecutor with the DPP since 1990 and was appointed Deputy Senior Crown Prosecutor in 2002.

From 1986 - 1990 she was Senior Principal Solicitor (Advocacy) at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Sir Ninian Stephen Lecture was established in 1993 to mark the arrival of the first group of Bachelor of Laws students at the University of Newcastle. It is an annual event delivered by an eminent lawyer at the commencement of the academic year.
