Uni hosts biggest Careers Expo in NSW

Thursday 17 March 2005

University of Newcastle graduates are again proving to be the top in their fields with more than 90 employers attending the University's Careers and Employers Expo to meet with them today.

The annual Careers and Employers Expo has grown to be the largest university graduate careers event in NSW.

Careers Advisor Melissa Moore says, "the expo is aimed at showcasing a broad range of careers and employment opportunities that our students can apply for by completing academic programs at the University of Newcastle."

"It says a great deal about the quality of our students that we attract more organisations to our careers events than Sydney metropolitan universities; and these organisations are coming directly to the University to market themselves as a prospective employer."

"Over 1000 students attended careers events last year and we are anticipating a similar number of final year and graduating students to attend this expo."

Students will be able to speak with employers about graduate programs, career paths, effective ways of obtaining employment within organisations and industry and develop a strong network of contacts for work experience and vacation work opportunities.

"Attending organisations range from those with an international profile to locally based firms. Some of the firms include Hunt and Hunt Lawyers, Connell Wagner Pty Ltd, Cathay Pacific Airways, Ernst and Young, The Samaritans, Dillon and Elbourn Chartered Accountants and Tomago Aluminium," says Melissa.

Editor’s Note: The Careers Expo will be held today (Thursday 17 March 2005) in the Great Hall, Callaghan campus. 10.30am - 1pm Careers for students of Health, Humanities, Business and Law. 3pm - 5.30pm Careers for students of Science, Engineering, Design and IT. The Careers Expo is open to University of Newcastle students, particularly final year and graduating students.
