New HSC and Language College in Newcastle

Monday 17 January 2005

The University of Newcastle will sign a memorandum of understanding with Stott's College on Thursday 20 January 2005, that will allow the College to provide international and HSC students access to university entry.

The College is credited through the NSW Board of Studies and will deliver Higher School Certificate (HSC) year 11 and 12 subjects and English language for international students at its new premises in Hunter Street Newcastle.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian English says Stott's College has been an education provider in Australia for 120 years and has an excellent reputation for delivering quality English language courses for international students.

"On successful completion of their English language course at the College, international students will be able to enter into an undergraduate degree program at the University of Newcastle. It will be an excellent additional English language service to that already provided by the University's own Language Centre."

International students will receive an English competency rating before they are eligible to go on to a University undergraduate program.

HSC students studying through Stott's College will have the opportunity to take Advanced Standing Courses in Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Marketing and Nursing and gain credit toward their undergraduate degree program," said the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Stott's College offers HSC year 11 and 12, English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Business Studies, Economics, Legal Studies, Society and Culture and languages other than English.

At present, the College will be able to accommodate 100 students including HSC and international English language students.

Stott's College Newcastle is expected to have its first intake of international students in July and the first of its HSC students in 2006.

The Newcastle College will be officially opened on the 16 February 2005.
