Most Students Got their First Choice

Thursday 20 January 2005

The University of Newcastle has been able to offer 65% of HECS place students their first choice and a further 15% their second choice.

Of the prospective students being made offers, 52% come from the Hunter Region and more than 20% come from Central Coast.

The University has a balance 40% school leavers and 60% non school leavers.

600 new students in 2005 will be from the TAFE Articulation scheme. Some of them will go straight into second year because of credit they receive for their TAFE diploma.

There has been an increase in the amount of Scholarships available to students this year. Up to 25% of all new students may be eligible for a scholarship under the new schemes.

For the first time this year, under the Federal Government Higher Education Reform Package, the University has been able to offer full fee paying places.

103 full fee places have been offered, to students who did not achieve HECS places.

A further 200 got HECS places for their second preference and have the option of fee paying in their first choice, or accepting their HECS place in their second preference.

The University has introduced a Place Guarantee Scheme which allows prospective students who have missed out on a HECS place an opportunity to take a fee paying place in their first choice, if their UAI is not below the advertised cut off level.

Those who accept a Full Fee Paying place can apply for the FEE HELP scheme that means they would pay no upfront fees.

The University has made more main round offers this year than last, because of the increased places made available in Oral Health, Teaching and Nursing.
