University Releases Main Round Offers

The University will release 5,946 Main Round offers to HECS-liable undergraduate students today.

The Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) says that 53,375 Main Round Offers are being made across NSW and ACT.

Facts on University of Newcastle Main Round Offers 2005

Number of offers being made: 6516

Required University Admissions Indexes (UAI's): The UAI cut-offs for 25 degree programs at the University of Newcastle have increased from 2004. The following programs require a UAI of 90 plus: Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Medicine, Biomedical Science, Combined Law Degrees including Bachelor of Science (Forensic)/Bachelor of Laws, Speech Pathology and all combined degrees.

Most popular degree programs: The University of Newcastle has increased preference demand for many programs. In particular, the combined degree programs of commerce and economics with mathematics, economics and science also recording strong increases in first preferences. Continued strength can be seen in medicine, business and OH&S programs.

Hardest to gain admission into: The hardest degree programs to gain admission into at Newcastle are the ones which require more than just a UAI. The Bachelor of Medicine has the most involved selection process, with applications to both UAC and the University, an admissions test conducted by the University, an interview and a satisfactory UAI.

Engineering remains a popular program and continues to achieve high numbers of good students, requiring a minimum UAI of 80 with the combined engineering degree programs requiring a UAI above 90.

The three Music programs (Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Arts) require applicants to perform an audition and achieve the required UAI.

Offers by the University of Newcastle in the Hunter, Central Coast and Port Macquarie regions:

  • 3697 offers have been made to applicants in the Hunter mail region.
  • 1275 offers have been made to applicants in the Central Coast mail region.
  • 52 offers have been made to programs offered at Port Macquarie.

Offers to students who have completed a preparatory course at the University of Newcastle:

  • 977 offers have been made to applicants who completed the Open Foundation Course at the University of Newcastle in 2004. Open Foundation is a program for people who have been out of the education system for some time and who hope to study in an undergraduate degree program in the future.
  • 197 offers have been made to applicants who completed the Newstep program at the University of Newcastle in 2004. Newstep is a program for 17-21 year olds who were disadvantaged in their upper schooling.
  • 2 offers have been made to applicants who completed the Yapug program at the University of Newcastle in 2004. Yapug is a pre-degree preparation program for Indigenous students.

Offers by the University of Newcastle to TAFE students:

  • 597 offers have been made to TAFE students.
  • Number of offers made to domestic fee paying students:

    • 567 offers have been made to fee paying students in 59 programs.

    What do students need to do now?

    Students can access their results from 9pm tonight at the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) website; they can call the UAC InfoLine on 1900 957 500 (calls are charged at 82.5 cents per minute and higher from mobile phones); or they can read the full list of offers on Thursday 20 January 2005 in The Sydney Morning Herald or The Daily Telegraph, with local subsets in The Herald and The Canberra Times. All applicants will receive a letter in the mail.

    The University of Newcastle will make further offers in subsequent UAC rounds this year. However, if applicants receive a Main Round offer they are strongly urged to accept their offer.

    Even if applicants want another program (which is a higher preference) at another University, they should still accept their offer as the UAC system will automatically consider their application for higher preferences in the late round.

    If applicants want to change or reorder their preferences, they should first check that the program they want to change to has vacancies (this is indicated by a V shown in brackets after the cut-off in the newspaper).

    Applicants who wish to change their preferences may do so from 19 January until 24 January 2005. Successful applicants can access Late Round offers via the UAC InfoLine and Website from 9pm on Monday 2 February 2005 and Final Round offers from 9am Wednesday 9 February 2005.

    Applicants who wish to accept or defer their offer of place at the University of Newcastle must follow the instructions sent with their offer.
