Accommodation in Sydney

Rental accommodation is readily available in Sydney.  As a general rule, the closer you live to the central business district (and the University of Newcastle in Sydney), the more expensive the cost of rental.   Most rental accommodation is provided unfurnished and requires payment of a rental ‘bond’ (equivalent to four weeks rent for an unfurnished property).   Fully furnished properties are less common than unfurnished ones.

Share accommodation is a good option for students wishing to live with others.  Share accommodation means that you have your own room and share a kitchen, living area and bathroom with other students or people who work.

You can find accommodation listings on the internet and in major Sydney newspapers.  Listings are updated weekly.   For share accommodation or rental accommodation, try these websites:

While Backpacker style accommodation is a reasonable option for temporary accommodation, it can be expensive in the long-term.  Rooms are usually of a dormitory style with limited facilities.   For student/backpacker accommodation, try:

Homestay with an Australian family can be arranged before you arrive in Sydney.  Host families welcome students as ‘part of the family’ providing a private room, meals and a true ‘Aussie’ experience.   Please note that this service is not offered by the University but a private operator.
