Dr Stephen McIlwaine

Steve McIlwaine, who teaches Journalism in the Communications program, has a PhD in Journalism and has been a journalist for 40 years in Australian capital-city and regional-city newspapers, as well as editing and designing Australian magazines. Most of his journalism career has been at news-executive level, including news editor and chief sub-editor. He continues to work in journalism, including design and design critique, as well as as a writer and columnist.
Dr McIlwaine also has undergraduate degrees in science, predominantly in biology, biochemistry and toxicology, and maintains a strong interest in science and the communication of science to lay audiences. His interests also include history and biography, along with a passion for philology and the elements of writing.
Before coming to Singapore, Dr McIlwaine has taught journalism at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Australian universities for almost 18 years. While this experience has been mostly at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, he also spent three years establishing a journalism program at James Cook University, Townsville, in the far north of Queensland. He returned to the University of Newcastle, the university he first attended as a student in 1967, three years ago.
