2013 Medical Alumni magazine
05 February 2014
Welcome back to another issue of our Medical Alumni magazine!
In this issue we share with you our latest news and events including the graduation of our first cohort of students from the Joint Medical Program which is run in partnership with the University of Newcastle, University of New England, Hunter New England and Central Coast Local Health Districts. Created to address the challenges of health care provision in rural and regional Australia, our highly successful and collaborative medical degree is already seeing graduating doctors embark on professional careers in rural and regional Australia.
The University of Newcastle can also proudly claim to have graduated the greatest number of Indigenous doctors in Australia. Our commitment to providing opportunities for all Australians embodies our leadership in Indigenous education. Our story on Associate Professor Peter O'Mara highlights a career that is committed to Indigenous health and medical education.
We also profile our change to awarding our JMP students a Doctor of Medicine (MD) commencing in 2015. This will replace our current BMed program which we have offered for over 30 years. The reason for this change is ensure our graduates are equipped to navigate the challenges that a career in research and medicine bring.
In other stories we highlight the amazing work of our Alumni including Dr Richard Fletcher for his work in screening for mental illness in fathers as well as profiling third year medical student Jessica Saunders who donated much needed medical resources to the neonatal and emergency departments at the National Paediatric Hospital in Cambodia as part of her medical elective.
We value staying in touch with our Alumni to ensure our medical program stays abreast of the challenges of working in modern medicine. If you know other medical alumnus either as friends or colleagues, please encourage them to send us their contact details via email to email@example.com.We hope this issue engages with you and we look forward to hearing more of your success stories throughout the coming year
