Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Admissions Scheme

Currently there are 21 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine program at the University of Newcastle. There have been 53 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors graduate from the University of Newcastle.

In 2009 there will be up to 16 places are available in Year 1 of the Bachelor of Medicine - JMP for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Indigenous students will be able to nominate their preferred enrolment location, either University of Newcastle or University of New England, at interview.

Application:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants wishing to be considered for entry to the Bachelor of Medicine- JMP must lodge an application with the Universities Admissions Centre (NSW & ACT) Pty Ltd (UAC) including the Bachelor of Medicine -JMP (CSP - 780000) as a preference by 31 October 2008.

Academic Eligibility:

The School of Medicine and Public Health will check each applicant's academic eligibility. Only those applicants who provisionally satisfy or satisfy the minimum academic requirement will be considered for interview. Applicants currently sitting the HSC, or equivalent, will be treated as if they provisionally satisfy the academic requirement.

Interviews:

Eligible applicants will be required to undertake the following interviews:

  • Confirmation of Aboriginality Interview
  • Personal Qualities Interview
  • Interviews for eligible applicants will be conducted during
  • November/December during the standard non-indigenous interview period.

Selection:

Academically eligible candidates will be ranked for selection based on their personal qualities interview. Offers will be made down the ranked list of academically eligible candidates until the available places at each location are filled. All offers will be made in the UAC Main Round.

Support Facilities:

At the University of Newcastle the Discipline of Indigenous Health within the School of Medicine and Public Health provides academic support to Indigenous students and Wollotuka - School of Aboriginal Studies provides social and cultural support. The Oorala Centre at the University of New England is a study and advisory support centre for Indigenous students. The Oorala Centre co-ordinates a variety of programs and events to encourage the access and participation by Indigenous students in higher education.
