Growing up in a small country town, the concept of moving to one of Australia’s largest cities to study music seemed rather daunting. In retrospect, however, it turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made.
From the very first week I was confronted with new challenges and most importantly, a new way of thinking. The quality and experience of the staff in not only the practical area of music, but also the theoretical area, made these challenges achievable.
Majoring in piano, I had never “really” taken the idea of using piano, or music in general for that matter, seriously before moving to Newcastle. With the expert training and constant encouragement of staff to achieve your best, I now have a wide range of employment opportunities as a result.
I am taught to explore different styles of music yet focus on my own interests. For me that was the music of Franz Liszt and Bela Bartok.
The conservatorium is not the sole reason for loving Newcastle however. Newcastle boasts a great social atmosphere. Having numerous beaches and a boisterous nightlife, Its great for having a “life” outside of the rigorous studies of university life. The recreation in Newcastle allows for so much more enjoyment during ones degree.
The most comforting factor during studies, however, would have to be the students. The atmosphere is one of mateship and understanding. All the students are in the same situation and this results in an environment that is supportive and accommodating. Never did I feel like I was competing with others, but that I was working with others to achieve my best.
