Chose Newcastle

'After spending some time considering my options of the USA, UK and Australia I chose the University of Newcastle. My decision in the end was that I loved the idea of being near the beaches and that the weather was similar to Kenya. Newcastle is also a great place to base myself for travelling around the region.'

The Best Things

'For me, the things I like about this University are that there are not that many distractions from my studies and the bushland setting means there are lots of places for me to study and relax. The courses are very engaging and the lecturers and tutors are always involving me in the class discussions. They really encourage me to learn about the intricacies of the Australian strands of my course. This is very important as an international student. Public relations is a very international course and will allow me to work anywhere in the world. However, I would love to get a job in Australia in entertainment and sports PR.

I have a buddy family that was organised by Student Support. The family has three kids and I love to visit them for dinner or just to hang out. It’s a great way for me to feel part of the community. The academic support staff are also very helpful and always respond nearly instantaneously to my emails - I still can’t believe they can do that with a class of over 100 students.'

:: Newcastle Life

My Newcastle life involves meeting lots of people, my friends are very important to me and I feel lucky that I have had the chance to meet people from such a diverse range of cultures. I have a friend who has moved back to Singapore. I now know a lot more about the country and she recently sent me chocolates from her home. That was pretty special! Outside of the University I enjoy the beach lifestyle, shopping and the Hunter valley is relaxing and very picturesque.

My Advice

When you study at Newcastle, my best advice would be to get out of your ‘comfort zone’ and make friends from as many countries as you can - it’s a rewarding experience. The University is a great chance to experience the world on a small scale. Take advantage of a rich and diverse cultural society!”
