International student arrival checklist
Visit International Office

Once you have arrived visit your International Student Advisor for advice and information about your orientation and your studies in Newcastle.

Organise AccommodationOnce you have arrived in Newcastle it is essential that you arrange Permanent Accommodation.  Assistance is available via the University's Accommodation Service
Arrange Student ID Card

Visit one of the four Student Hubs to arrange your ID card - your ID Card is your passport to access University libraries, the University's computer system and student concessions

Activate your University of Newcastle student accountTo make your transition in to study easier you can activate your University of Newcastle student account before you leave home.
Attend OrientationThere is an Orientation information session for each Semester, Trimester and ELICOS intake
Visit International OfficeThe International Office is located in the Hunter Building, Callaghan Campus. You can ask our friendly staff for advice and assistance
Orientation and enrolment
OrientationOrientation will provide you with information on; University services, social interaction, program enrolment and Academic Support workshops. Orientation is an essential part of your studies at the University and should not be missed
EnrolmentInternational students are required to enrol in a full time study load. This is 40 units (4 courses) per semester and 30 units (3 courses) per trimester. This is a student visa requirement which is monitored by the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) team. All degree students are required to enrol via the online myHub system prior to the relevant closing dates.
Local and social networks
ChaplaincyThe chaplains come from several different Churches providing spiritual,
religious, ethical, pastoral and personal support and care to students and staff
Student EmailAll students of the University are automatically granted a student email
account on completion of enrolment. You can access your NUmail by clicking
on any of the links on the University web pages or by going here:
http://www.outlook.com/uon.edu.au
Official University correspondence to students will be sent via this email account, so you should check your NUmail account regularly

International Office
International Office is located at the University of Newcastle Callaghan Campus. The International Office is here to help you.
The Admissions Team look after all matters relating to undergraduate, postgraduate and Study Abroad applications for international students.

The Student Experience and Community Engagement team provides a range of welfare and support services.

The International Student Advisors can offer practical and personal support to international students who need local advice and help.

The Community Engagement team organise activities, programs and events linking University of Newcastle students with the local community.

Counselling ServiceThe Counselling Service is available to clarify and resolve a range of issues, which might otherwise interfere with academic or personal effectiveness.
Disability Support ServiceIf you are experiencing difficulties with your studies due to the effects of a permanent or temporary disability or medical condition, you can register with the Disability Support Service. You may be eligible for a range of support and assistance
University Health ServiceThe Health Service provides both emergency and routine medical care to all students and staff as well as visitors
Emergency ServicesDial 000 for Police, Fire Brigade and Ambulance
Legal ServiceThe University of Newcastle Legal Centre (UNLC) provides free legal advice and information on a range of matters. Please phone (02) 4921 8666 to make an appointment
LoansThe Student Loans Scheme provides interest free emergency loans on a short term basis to students who demonstrate genuine need and whose continued study might be placed in jeopardy if assistance were not available
OSHCAll students are required to have Overseas Health Cover whilst they are studying in Australia.
Security ServicesSecurity Services are available on Campus 24 hours a day 7 days a week. A free Security Shuttle Bus is available at Callaghan and Central Coast Campus.
If you need an escort on campus, have had something stolen, have lost something or if you are in trouble, just call Security. All security staff can be identified by their security uniform and name badge.
