Academic short courses
Academic Short courses are less than a semester exchange, and are generally between 2 to 4 weeks in duration, typically run during the winter and summer breaks. They are a great option for those who are unable to participate in a Semester Exchange, those who want to add an international element to their degree, or by those who have a spare elective. The University of Newcastle works with several universities and organisations that manage a wide range of short-term programs for students all over the world.
There are 2 types of short-term programs:
Short term (Agreement)
These Short Courses are courses where you do not pay any tuition to the host university/course provider, instead you continue to pay tuition to the University of Newcastle (either upfront or through HECS). You will typically still be liable for various other costs including airfares, accommodation, travel etc. Please check your chosen course carefully to determine what is included in the price, and what out of pocket expenses you will be liable for.
Short term (Direct)
These short courses require the course fees and tuition to be paid directly to the host university/course provide., Please check your chosen course carefully to determine what is included in the price, and what out of pocket expenses you will be liable for.
In order to be eligible to participate in an Academic Short Course you must:
- Be currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Postgraduate Coursework degree at the University of Newcastle
- Must receive credit for the short course towards your University of Newcastle degree
- Fulfill any specific requirements for the course you plan to undertake - please check your selected course carefully.
Before you apply, please note:
- Although the University of Newcastle does not have a minimum GPA requirement to participate in a direct short course, some short course providers will enforce one, please check the specific course you are looking to apply for to determine this information.
- Students who wish to complete a short course prior to completing 80 units of study will not be eligible to apply for the OS-HELP loan.
In order for an Academic Short Course to count towards your degree, students will need to gain credit for a minimum of 10 units of credit for the course while overseas. In other words, the course you are studying overseas needs to correspond to a course within your degree at the University of Newcastle in order for it to be credited towards your degree. For core courses, your chosen overseas course will need to be very similar to the University of Newcastle course for it to be considered for credit. Electives on the other hand, do not need to correspond to any specific course at the University of Newcastle. If possible, we recommend that you plan ahead to enable you to take your short course as an elective.
Please note, although you may be eligible to apply for a short term program, credit towards your degree is not guaranteed. It is your responsibility to research, create and gain approval for your overseas study plan/credit agreement prior to departure. You can find more information about this process here.
Although some short courses do not require tuition to be paid to the overseas institution, you will still be liable for costs such as accommodation, administration fees, airfares, visas, health insurance or additional travel insurance. This amount will vary depending on the short course you choose. To assist in these costs you may be eligible for:
OS-Help loan

Global Traveller Short Term Experience Exchange Grant
