Profile:
Dr Jason L. Powell is interested in aspects of the lifecourse, health and social care, social theory and capacity building of the third sector. Dr Powell has managed eleven research funded projects including three large research grant projects on understanding the social welfare experiences of older people: National Lottery Community Fund (£186,775) on older people and social inclusion using participatory action research to track the narratives of older people and their sense of well being. He recently was project director of a European Social Fund (£168,000) project about enabling unemployed older people to higher education and work based learning to challenge ageism and facilitate their inclusion in a system dominated by younger groups in the life-course. He is currently working on a BASIS research programme with St Helens CVS (£498,000) that assesses the infrastructure of frontline community and voluntary organisations and user groups in England. Dr Powell has over 100 professional publications, serves on over 30 international journal editorial boards including Canadian Journal of Sociology, Journal of Comparative Welfare and International Journal of Social Welfare. He has just been appointed Associate Editor of the Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare.
Research
Jason Powell research interests on: ageing are focused around the following issues: bio-medicalisation of old age; Foucauldian approaches to gerontology; social welfare and older people's experiences; participatory action research; and third sector capacity building.
