INFORMATION FOR ARTISTS

The 2009 Mistletoe Acquisitive Sculpture Awardis an acquisitive prize of $2000 sponsored by the owners of Mistletoe Wines, Ken and Gwen Sloan, for a large sculpture to be sited permanently outdoors at their winery.

The award was instigated in 2003 by Mistletoe Wines and previous winners were April Erzetich (2003), Sandra Lee Brown (2005) and Julian Lea (2007).

The prize will be awarded to a selected artist from the 2009 prize exhibition to be held at Watt Space from 7-25 October, 2009.  The winning work will be permanently sited outdoors at Mistletoe Wines, Pokolbin.

This year the sponsors of the award, Ken and Gwen Sloan, invite student artists to create a sculpture that relates directly to the dam in the Mistletoe Wines sculpture garden.  Works should be able to be sited either close to the dam edge, or within the dam, or on or near the island that is in the middle of the dam.  Assistance in installing a work within the dam and possible use of a pump can be provided.

The prize will be awarded to a selected artist from the 2009 prize exhibition to be held at Watt Space from 7-25 October, 2009.  The winning work will be permanently sited within the Mistletoe Wines sculpture garden, Pokolbin.  Student artists are welcome to visit Mistletoe anytime to research the site for their proposed work.

 

Entrants must be current students of the University of Newcastle.  All entry conditions must be adhered to be entrants (see below).




MATERIALS FUNDING


To encourage large scale works materials funding to a maximum of $550 per artist for up to eight entrants will be available. 

A second round of  Funding proposals are being offered.  The closing date for this second round is 28 August 2009.

Entries are invited from any interested students and will be exhibited at Watt Space from 7- 25 October with the prize-winner announced at the Opening Night which is Wednesday 7 October.  At the exhibition close the winning work and selected entries will be exhibited at Mistletoe Wines.



 

2009 TIMELINE FOR AWARD:

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

1.       Entrants must be current students of the University of Newcastle.  There will be an entry fee of $10.00 per artist.

 
2.       The focus of this unique award is to encourage students working in sculpture at the University of Newcastle to create and produce a
        sculpture suitable for external placement at Mistletoe Winery. 

 

3.       The single acquisitive prize ($2000) and materials funding for materials for eightstudents (up to $550 each) has been designed to
        encourage entrants to submit completed large-scale works.

4.       Entrants are asked to create a sculpture suitable for external placement in all weathers on the site of Mistletoe Wines at Pokolbin.   
         Entrants are encouraged to research the climatic conditions and terrain of the site.  Installation procedures suitable for internal

        exhibition at Watt Space and external positioning at Mistletoe Wines must be a consideration of the design and construction of the

        sculpture.

 

5.       Works must be the original work of the artist and must have been completed in the twelve months leading up to the award.


6.       The work must be suitable for long-term external placement at Mistletoe Wines and be of dimensions and weight that enable

         practicable transport and placement in both the gallery and the external sculpture garden of Mistletoe Wines.  Any supports, plinths

         or siting requirements must be incorporated into the overall design of the sculpture and must remain the same for both gallery

         and external positioning.

7.       Works must be well constructed to ensure safety during transportation, handling, installation and display. If an entry breaches

         OH&S guidelines it will be withdrawn by the Director of Watt Space.

8.       Installation, delivery and insurance of all works whilst on exhibition at Watt Space will be the responsibility of the artist.

9.       The Award will be judged by a panel of three including a representative from Mistletoe Winery. 

10.   Entrants will be required to do gallery duty at Watt Space during the exhibition as per agreed roster.  Invitations, opening night costs

        and advertising for the exhibition will the responsibility of the gallery. 

 

11.   Selected works from the Watt Space exhibition including the winning work will be exhibited at Mistletoe Wines following the exhibition. 
        The transportation of works will be negotiated between the exhibitors and Mistletoe Wines.

 



MATERIALS FUNDING  PROPOSALS

 

Ken and Gwen Sloan from Mistletoe Wines have generously agreed to sponsor a maximum of eight student entrants up to $550 each to meet the cost of materials used in the construction of their works .  This funding is for the cost of materials incurred in producing a sculpture for entry in the 2009 Mistletoe Acquisitive Sculpture Award.  Please note that this funding is for materials only.
