2008 Watt Space Open Show

curated by Simone Sheridan, Neal Booth & Ruth Feeney

Student representatives of the 2008 Watt Space Management Committee

 14 May – 1 June 2008

The exhibition is to be judged and opened by artists

Ken O’Regan and Mandy Francis and Art Theory Lecturer Lisa Slade on Thursday 15 May at 7pm.

This year the curators of the 2008 Watt Space Open Show Neal Booth, Simone Sheridan and Ruth Feeney, have asked students from the University of Newcastle to respond to the theme Make Do. Artists have been encouraged to look to their immediate environment and respond to the rampant over-consumption present in today’s society. Artworks made with discarded and recycled materials create an animated collision of creativity and resourcefulness.

Prizes for Make Do have kindly been donated from local organizations and businesses -Newcastle Region Art Gallery,  the Co-op Bookshop, Bunnings Kotara, Eckersley’s Art, Craft and Imagination, Les Porter Photographic Services and Pronto Photo Centre. Wine for opening night was sponsored by First Creek Wines, Pokolbin.

A rare and exciting opportunity exists this year which enables students to move their work beyond the gallery walls and into the public sphere. The Public Art Prize is facilitated by the Newcastle Region Art Gallery and awarded to the winning entrant whose work will be installed in a public site in Newcastle during This Is Not Art, Australia’s premier independent, emerging and experimental arts festival held here in Newcastle.
