2007 Watt Space Open Show

MAKE IT PUBLIC !

curated by Jessica Coughlan, Sam Galletly and Belinda Howden
student representatives of the 2007 Watt Space Management Committee

about the show…

This year’s take on the Watt Space annual Open Show, Make It Public!, prompts students to move their work into the public sphere, be it for the first time exhibitor or for the well experienced artist. Including such diverse media as painting, sculpture, works on paper, fibre, photography, new media and text, Make It Public! shifts the focus of the organisation of the Open Show beyond the gallery walls.

This exhibition will coincide with local festival Cultural Stomp on Saturday 19 May, with art students traversing Auckland street and moving into Civic Park to give workshops, trade their wares and construct images plein air.

In a unique collaborative opportunity with Newcastle Region Art Gallery and Newcastle City Council, Watt Space launches its own public program through the prizes offered in this year’s show. With a public site donated by the NCC, a student will be awarded professional public art experience through a commissioned mural. Among other prizes, Make It Public! offers through Avant Card the printing and distribution of a selected work state wide.

With a projection towards the future comes the launch of Watt Space’s first ever website design competition. Students are given the opportunity to create an independent student-run web gallery and discussion site that propels designers, artists, writers and Watt Space into the digitally public sphere.

The 2007 Watt Space Open Show truly encourages students to Make it Public!
