       Clipping

curated by Jessica Coughlan, Sam Galletly & Ahn Wells

fibres

In practise clipping can be both a method of shortening or separating materials through the cut, or the action of cutting.  Likewise and otherwise it may be the process of holding things tightly or together.  A group of students sharing common ground in the studio space at the University of Newcastle Fibre department are all creating works that explore interpretations of this concept. The Park

TREVOR HORSNELL

painting and drawing

The Parkseeks to explore perception and the changes in the way we view our community’s open space.  Playground and relaxation space during the day, dark, dangerous, sleazy and frightening after sunset.  The Park never changes only our perceptions change.  Trevor Horsnell

Luminous Sky

GILLIAN THOMAS

painting
The sky is an ever changing source of natural beauty. Through the paintings presented in Luminous Sky I seek to capture the dynamic character that is offered to us in the dark of night, the light of day, the shadow of a storm, the softness of rain or the brightness of dawn.  The use of oil glazes in a series of colours and consistencies have been applied to each canvas differently. With the organic nature of the paint I attempted to capture the sky’s unpredictable and sometimes unrealistic imagery through vibration, wiping, and reapplication of the glaze as it settled on the canvas.

Mark Rothko and J.M.W Turner’s use of soft textured surfaces and rich colours have been a guiding inspiration during my creative process. Gillian Thomas

Rebirth

LUCILA N MADDOX

painting

Rebirthis a journey that explores daring bold spaces to bring us a constellation of forms, colours and symbolic representations that come from my childhood memories and from intentional or non-intentional dramatic changes to the Australian landscape.  The main motivation of my work is that the environment and freedom of humanity are being slowly destroyed.  My intention is to engage the viewer in an active and positive response to building a better world.Lucila N Maddox
