STATE OF THE ARTS 2008 gives entrants an opportunity to challenge the socially accepted notion of what an artist is. While doing this, participants should take into consideration the social and political state of art in Australia and the use of state of the

art technology in creative industries.

Terms and Conditions

A travelling scholarship worth a minimum of $1300 will be awarded to the overall winner and the work will be acquired by UoN Services Ltd for their permanent art collection. The Travelling Scholarship must be used by the successful applicant to further their art education through travel.
Artworks that best respond to the theme will be eligible for one of three highly commended awards. Each of these prizes will receive a minimum of $500.
Each exhibitor must pay a gallery fee of $10 which will cover gallery rental.
The overall winning work shall become the property of the UoN Services Ltd Collection upon payment of the prize-money.
Entrants must be currently enrolled students of the University of Newcastle.
Entered works must be available for display throughout the duration of the exhibition until 6pm on Sunday 14 September. All unsold works must be collected on Sunday 14 September between 6 – 8pm.
Artists must make themselves available for gallery duty during the exhibition. Roster Duty will be divided evenly between all entrants. In the event of the artist not staffing the gallery as agreed a fine of $15 per hour will be levied.
Entry must be an original work by the entrant. The work must have been executed within the last 12 months prior to 20 June 2008.
All work must be clearly labelled on the back with the artist’s name and contact details, title, medium and price.
Artworks must be DRY and ready for hanging, including hooks, pins etc, attached by the artist. There are no size or weight restrictions however the curator reserves the right to select work for exhibition. Students may enter more than one entry however be aware that not all may be included. Also, if a series is entered all may not be exhibited. Exhibition, placement and display of entries within Watt Space are entirely at the discretion of the curator. Judges will have no access to the name or gender of entrants throughout the judging process. The judges’ decisions will be final. No appeal process will be entered into.
The judges shall solely determine the winners. However, the judges and the curator reserve the right to not award an overall winner. Each entrant specifically permits and authorises Watt Space to reproduce his or her work for publicity purposes, catalogues, or any other publication related to the gallery, during the exhibition and at any time in the future. Works shall at all times be at the risk of the entrant and Watt Space and UoN Services whilst exercising all care is not responsible for the loss, damage or theft of works whilst in the gallery.
Works that sell during the course of this exhibition are subject to the gallery’s standard commission of 27.5% which includes GST if applicable. For works to be deemed as sold a minimum of 10% of the sale price must be paid. No sold work is to be removed from the gallery until the full sale price is paid to the gallery.
