Fashion Overload: three approaches to Fashion Photography

Using the human face as the canvas, Eye Spy is a work inspired by bird like creatures of this earth. Each design on the face is unique, drawn free hand using paintbrushes to apply the materials to the bare skin. The hair plays a very important role in the creation, recreating messy ‘birds nest’ inspired do’s!

In Force orange fabric is used to create a garment in a way so that tying the fabric around the body became the garment’s construction method. The natural forces of the wind throw the fabric into the atmosphere, metaphorically creating a visualisation of how lost one can become.

ALLAN DUNCAN

This contribution to the group exhibition Fashion Overload marks the next chapter in the development of Allan Duncan’s professional practice. Conceptually he has borrowed heavily from current trends in the fashion industry mixed with his own unique and simple lighting techniques to produce a body of work that would fit in any contemporary fashion magazine. Allan has recently been accepted into Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany to begin the next chapter in his artistic endeavours and this exhibition gives his audience the chance to see his final body of work produced before he embarks on this amazing journey.

KATHLEEN MACKAY

Established in 2009, Newcastle Fashion Week is an annual festival of all things fashion, design, innovation and creativity. After being given the chance to become a part of the NFW team, Kathleen Mackay, an emerging young creative director and photographer, goes behind the scenes in their recent shoot to film the TVC for this amazing event.

CEE9. On hearing this without prior knowledge, one can be forgiven for being confused. However, this group of 13 artists is accustomed to this, and have come to appreciate what it stands for. CEE9 is the exact co-ordinate of the location of the Ceramics Building on The University of Newcastle’s Callaghan Campus. This building and its inhabitants providing a home for learning and inspiration, this exhibition being the result of a semester’s worth of work.

Working for all hours without needing rest; planning and conceiving with no effort. Ideas and thoughts rushing through with enormous speed and power; inspiration in every part of my world, everything feels a gift just for me. Everything feels connected, special; part of something bigger. It all feels so easy; the path is lit and all I have to do is follow it. Elation like this has never lasted this long before. For as long as I remember I’ve been labeled as quirky, and I’ve always been creative. Its what I’ve always been good at. It has long been known that there is a link between Bipolar Disorder and creativity. I just never knew it applied to me. Barbie Procobis’ exhibition is an exploration of the effects of mental illness on the creative process through drawings, sculptures and photographs.

Using photography and paper mache a brief glance into her past is represented by her future and comes together to tell the world that depression isn't anything to be ashamed of.

The Pit

Kaleidoscope
JORDAN FARDELL

The exhibition consists of printed and drawn work inspired by kaleidoscopes. The works experiment with colours and their interaction with one another. I used a range of colours that connects to the work of Daniel Buren. The printed installation work uses the procedure of four colour separation printing with a twist, and the automatic drawings illustrate my take on traditional kaleidoscopes. There is no planning in my drawings I just grab the pen and draw; therefore the kaleidoscopes are images of my emotions at a particular time. I create images that represent me and illustrate my obsession with detail.
