KINDRED
the 2012 UoN Services Annual Student Art Prize
Curated by Barbie Procobis
The Artists
Current students of the University of Newcastle have been invited to submit new or recent work that responds to the theme Kindred.
The Theme
Kindred calls on students to share their experiences of kindred connections, drawing on (but not restricted to) ideas of nostalgia, identity and passion. We want to know what they feel connected to, what drives their creative practice, and how they can share the experience.
The Prizes
This year’s main prize is a $1500 Traveling Scholarship. There are also additional cash prizes, and all prizes will be awarded on opening night.
The Judges
This year artists Maria Ionico, Lisa Who, and Qwux have been asked to judge the prize.
Maria Ionico is an Italian-born Sydney based artist; she has been the recipient of Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship, the Manning Regional Gallery Sculpture Prize and the Fishers Ghost Art Prize, as well as numerous residencies and grants.
Lisa Who is an artist, curator and the Creative Director of Curve Gallery. She established Curve Studios in the UK in 2005, and recently opened Curve Gallery in Newcastle. She exhibits internationally, and takes inspiration from travel and architectural forms.
Qwux is a Sydney based illustrator and poster artist with a penchant for screenprinting. He is the founder and creative director of Rah Collective, and has had work printed in numerous Australian and international publications.
