The Yapug program at the University of Newcastle offers a range of courses designed to prepare students for undergraduate degrees.

Yapug

What's in the program?

The Yapug pathway program will allow you to:

  1. Discover your own interest in and capacity for on-going tertiary studies;
  2. Prepare for study at university level; and
  3. Obtain, on successful completion of the program, a ranking which allows you to apply for a place in an undergraduate degree program at university.

When you enrol in Yapug you can elect to study the full-time program (80 units)  taken over one year (two semesters), or the part-time program taken over three or four semesters. Students should take no more than 40 units in any one semester. The maximum time allowed to complete the program is two years.

Before you apply for Yapug we recommend that you review the important university dates to be sure that you can meet the commitments of the program.

Yapug Pathway Options - Semester 1 commencement

The program is designed to provide a pathway for you into your preferred undergraduate degree program. As such, students are placed into one of the four pathway programs below.

Please note: EPHUMA112 Aboriginal Tertiary Foundations and EPHUMA136 Directed Study are compulsory. These two courses provide students with an excellent introduction to study at university. They will help you develop independent learning skills. You will have the opportunity to meet with the Yapug lecturer to discuss progress on a weekly basis. Enrolment in Part 2 of a course in Semester 2 is normally reliant on satisfactory completion of Part 1 in Semester 1. Students will be given advice in the Orientation and Information Workshop on their selection of courses.

Assessment and program completion

Yapug is an 80 unit program of study. To meet the requirements for the Yapug program a student must complete 80 units and achieve passing grades in at least 70 units from the 80 units of study. Requirements for assessment in all courses must be completed. The assessment requirements will be set out in the course outlines provided for each course at the start of the semester.

Orientation and information workshop

The orientation and information workshop provides an opportunity to talk to people about Yapug and gain advice on choosing the most appropriate courses to prepare you for undergraduate study. A number of staff will be available to counsel and support you, and you will have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the campus and its facilities.

Workshop dates

Workshops take place at the beginning of each semester. Keep an eye on this page for information about 2014 workshops.

The Yapug pathway program is offered at the Newcastle campus at Callaghan, a modern campus set in a bushland environment, 12 kilometres from the Newcastle city centre. It is easily accessed by public transport.
