The Professor Alan Roberts Undergraduate Scholarship in Engineering

Emeritus Professor Alan Roberts has been sharing the gift of education at the University of Newcastle for more than 30 years and now former students would like to thank him for his leadership, mentorship and friendship by establishing a scholarship in his name.

Bachelor of Engineering graduate, Mr CHOO Heng Thong, has established the Professor Alan Roberts Undergraduate Scholarship in Engineering to honour his long term dedication to the Faculty of Engineering and its students throughout the years.

The initial funding for the scholarship has been provided by Mr CHOO but he is now inviting former students of Professor Roberts and of the University to continue to make further contributions to the fund in order to ensure its perpetuity.

The scholarship will be offered to students enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering in the hope that future students will benefit from Professor Roberts' legacy.

Professor Roberts began his work in the area of Mechanical Engineering at the Wollongong University College, now University of Wollongong, in 1962 where he also completed a PhD in Soil Mechanics. In 1974 he took up the Chair of Industrial Engineering at the University of Newcastle and was elected Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, a position which he dedicated himself to and held for the next 20 years. During this time Professor Roberts has also worked passionately in the area of Bulk Solid Material Handling, establishing the TUNRA Bulk Solids Handling Research Associates (TBS) in 1975.

Professor Roberts is a strong believer in education supported by industry and has endeavoured to share his work and knowledge globally, teaching and delivering lectures in the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway and the United Kingdom.
