Projects 2007 - 2009

In 2007 the University of Newcastle Foundation launched a scholarship campaign and a number of other important projects. These projects have been proposed to the UoN Foundation both by faculties and community members who are working to improve our University. In 2008 we will be launching an annual appeal to our national and international graduates. We will also be seeking advice from the faculties and community leaders about future projects which can contribute to the life of the University and the community.

Scholarship campaign

This year the UoN Foundation has launched a campaign to increase the number and range of scholarships we can offer to our students. Scholarships give those students who excel in various areas, such as academic, sport and research, recognition for their achievements. Scholarships provide support, confidence and encouragement, keeping students motivated and helping them to focus on their goals. Scholarships also provide financial aid for students who otherwise may have missed out on an opportunity to attend University.

We hope that through successful fundraising we will increase both the number of high achieving students and the support we can provide for them. The more diverse and talented students we can attract, the better the potential for learning and research. This will also lead to greater success of our graduates and therefore increased benefit to our community and our world.

Royal Newcastle Hospital

The Royal Newcastle Hospital Heritage Committee aims to recognise the Royal Newcastle Hospital in perpetuity through the establishment of the RNH Fellowship. The Fellowship is a valuable intellectual endowment for health services, the University, and the community. This Fellowship is the result of collaboration between the RNH Heritage Committee, the Hunter New England Area Health Service and the University of Newcastle, and will benefit health care personnel.

The annual Fellowship appointment will be awarded on the basis of innovative and outstanding performance in health scholarship, clinical achievement, health related services and/or research relevant to at least one of the values of which the Royal Newcastle Hospital was known.

Endowment fund

An Endowment Fund is a fund for the future. The University of Newcastle Foundation is as keen to attract unspecified funds as it is to attract funds for specific purposes. By receiving unspecified donations, the University can aid projects that are of priority. Funds may also be used to provide scholarships for disadvantaged students.

Bequests

When you make a bequest to the University of Newcastle you become part of a tradition, a tradition that looks back to the foundations of the University spirit, and ahead to a world enhanced by knowledge, learning and education. Vera Deacon Regional History Fund

The purpose of the Vera Deacon Regional History Fund is to support and encourage regional history through the acquisition, preservation and study of valuable regional historical resources. This fund will enable the University to uncover, preserve and safeguard Newcastle and the Hunter region’s important archives and documentary heritage for future generations. Our history holds the key to our future. Without our archives and the knowledge and wisdom they impart to us, we cannot meet the challenges ahead.

Chancellor's Great Hall Fund

This fund has been established to raise funds for facilities and events involving the Great Hall. In 2007 generous donors supported:

  • the installation of the digital pipe organ
  • the orchestra for the performance of the Messiah

The Great Hall piano is desperately in need of repair. The support for the Great Hall fund will ensure that the Great Hall will continue to play a major role in the cultural life of the University and our region.
