Suters Architects
Architecture students at the University of Newcastle can now explore the field of urban design, thanks to a generous donation from a leading Newcastle architectural firm. Suters Architects has significantly contributed towards the establishment of a professorial position in Urban Design within the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle. Urban Design involves the specific physical configurations of shaping settings for life in developed areas, including the design of buildings, spaces and landscapes in accordance with urban planning.
Suters Architects is a leading multi-disciplinary architecture practice with 150 staff across four offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Brisbane. The firm has been involved in many of Newcastle's significant building projects, including Queens Wharf, Newcastle Regional Museum, Port Stephens Council, 670 Hunter Street, Honeysuckle House, the restoration of the Civic Theatre and Playhouse, and Customs House.
Brian Suters, founding partner and recently retired Vice Chairman, graduated from the Newcastle School of Architecture in 1961. He completed his studies with First Class Honours and was awarded the University Medal. He was also the recipient of the Byera-Hadley Travelling scholarship for his outstanding efforts while studying.
Brian sees the relationship between the University and Suters Architecture as two-way. "We've been able to assist the University through scholarships, by providing tutors and providing opportunities for experience. In return, we've been able to staff our practice with outstanding graduates from Newcastle University."
Indeed current CEO, Robert Macindoe, and Practice Managers David Rose and Dino DiPaolo, are all Newcastle graduates and the company actively encourages its Newcastle students and staff to broaden their architectural horizons through secondment to its interstate offices and through an ongoing international staff exchange program.
