Teaching and Learning

Teaching in the Faculty of Science and Information Technology is characterised by our commitment to the best possible learning experience. There are several aspects to this.

Award-winning staff with a professional outlook

Firstly, we have a commitment to the training and professional development of our staff. New academic staff are required to undertake professional training in tertiary teaching, and teaching performance and innovation is an aspect considered in promotion applications. Several of our teaching staff have won prestigious teaching awards, and non-teaching staff have won excellence awards for their role in the provision of outstanding student support services.

Global opportunities in research

Most academic staff are active researchers, and many are leaders in their particular fields. Staff are encouraged to use results of their research to inform their teaching. In addition, students have the chance to learn alongside some of the world's leading researchers. For example, many degree programs provide the opportunity for research project placements, in which students can study and work in research groups alongside researchers and on current important problems.

Degree programs with professional recognition

All our degree programs are reviewed on a rolling cycle by independent panels that include external academics, employer and student representatives. In addition, industry advisory panels provide regular scrutiny of program relevance, while the performance of all programs and courses is examined annually. Many of our degree programs carry professional accreditation or other forms of professional recognition, and we have a commitment for all programs to carry professional recognition where available.

Our students are active in improving teaching standards

Students are regularly surveyed regarding the performance of our teachers, the courses they are studying, and the degree programs. The survey results are used to drive improvements in our teaching and course development.

Facilities with leading edge technologies

The Faculty has a commitment to providing the best possible teaching facilities. For example, the Chemistry teaching laboratories were recently completely refurbished to leading international standard, and students studying design, communication and information technology do so in new facilities that are also at the leading edge.

Pride in diversity

Students come from all around to study in our Faculty. We have students that are local high-school graduates, mature age, on-campus international, students we teach face-to-face in Singapore, Malaysia, and other countries, undergraduates from overseas as part of twinning program arrangements, and higher degree students from around the world. Our graduates also travel and work in just as wide a variety of locations. We have produced leaders in all areas of science, communication and IT - geologists, psychologists, rocket scientists, mathematicians, ecologists, chemists, etc.

Study in the Faculty of Science and Technology opens up a huge variety of exciting opportunities. We are proud of what we do, and excited to welcome new students here.
